If you’ve landed on this page to learn how to organize your storage room, you’re in the right place.
I know how frustrating it can be to have a cluttered home, not finding what you need, constantly searching for your belongings, and spending endless hours reorganizing because you can’t maintain order. Sound familiar?

Now, picture your home as an organized oasis, where everything has its designated place, doesn’t obstruct pathways, and ensures you’re never late because you know exactly where to find what you need. It’s a dream come true, right?
Well, I’m here to provide you with some straightforward tips to kickstart your journey to organize your storage room today.
Things you need to organize your storage room (apart from time!)
The key ingredients here are patience and a clear goal of organizing your storage room. However, if you ask me, I highly recommend the following products listed below. They’re not expensive, and you can find them in many stores. I’ll also share my recommendations to save you time searching for the best products.
Boxes

Boxes work wonders for maintaining an organized home, and that’s why they top my list. They are essential for organizing your storage room.
My favorite brand of boxes is Plastic Forte, known for their durable and long-lasting plastic products. The goal here is not just to organize but to be smart with your spending in achieving your objective. You can find this brand in many places, but always double-check for the brand label, as there are many cheap imitations that won’t last as long as genuine Plastic Forte boxes. They tend to break as soon as you place something heavy in them, leaving you without a box and without order.
Labels

I love labels, and once you start using them, you’ll love them too. Labels are budget-friendly and incredibly useful when organizing your storage room.
I’ve found for you the most affordable label maker on Amazon, allowing you to purchase it without leaving your home. This label maker is a fantastic acquisition as it enables you to write and print labels super fast. Additionally, its cartridges last a long time and are inexpensive.
Of course, you don’t necessarily need to buy a label maker; using stickers and indelible markers is also a great option. Though trust me, once you buy this label maker, you’ll want to label everything in your house.
Shelves

I know what you’re thinking – shelves sound like they’ll cost you a fortune to organize your storage room, but believe me, it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t need a huge budget to get some excellent shelves that will help you organize your storage room.
If you search on Wallapop, you’ll definitely find second-hand shelves similar to the ones I recommend below:
- Economical and super practical, Leroy Merlin’s shelving can greatly assist you in finally organizing your storage room. You don’t need tools to assemble it, and it can support up to 1,500kg.
- If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, this LIDL shelf is an excellent choice. It’s also easy to assemble and can be set up either vertically or horizontally.
Now, tell me which one you’ve chosen to organize your storage room.
Steps to organize your storage room

Now you might be thinking, «Okay, I know what items I can use, but where do I start?» Don’t worry; I’ve got you covered with a step-by-step process I’ve personally tested in my own home and with my clients to effectively organize a storage room:
Step 1: Look at your space
Take note of the boxes and shelves you already have and ask yourself the following questions: Are they being used? Are they completely full? Now, continue surveying the space. What items are disorganized? What are their sizes? Can they be stored in boxes? Measure each item so you know what box size to buy.
Step 2: Buy material
It’s important to have noted the measurements of the boxes you need and the quantity required. This step is the most tempting, but don’t skip step one before you go shopping for your boxes and shelves.
Step 3: Take everything out
It’s time to see everything you have stored in your storage room and ask yourself some questions. When was the last time I used this? Can I donate it and let someone else use it? Can I sell it? As you go through different items, group them.
Step 4: Group your items
Create different groups with the various items. Each box belongs to a different group. This will save you a lot of time in the future.
Some of the classifications you can use to group your items are:
- By season (summer, spring)
- By type of object (tools, toys, clothing)
- Special events (party decorations, DIY)
Step 5: Replace items
Taking into consideration how often you use different items, arrange them in the room:
- Place things you use frequently near the door.
- Conversely, items you use occasionally (such as Christmas or Halloween decorations) should be further in the trastero or in a less handy place.
Step 6: Labeling
Once everything is organized, it may seem like the work is done, but it’s not! It’s time to label, undoubtedly my favorite step. You can choose to use the label maker or stickers and an indelible marker.
Step 7: Maintenance of order
This step is crucial but often forgotten, and you may end up starting from scratch, which can be very frustrating. So, don’t skip step 7.
Now that your storage room is organized, don’t turn it into a dumping ground. Respect the order you established initially by placing each item in its corresponding box or shelf.
A good habit for this step is to donate or recycle, as it helps you remove from your house those items you no longer use.
